Cinnamon Frosted Sugar Cookie Recipe
(Valentine's Day Edition)
This is a family recipe that my mom made for us. I didn't love them until I got older and now they are such a treat! They are just a plain sugar cookie base and then the cinnamon is in the frosting. They could be made for any holiday or time of the year. My mom always made them for Valentine's Day so that's what I associate them with! You can use any kinds of cookie cutters for different shapes and any color of frosting. Customize them to your liking.
Here is the sugar cookie recipe we like, but any sugar cookie recipe could be used. Even the store bought premade dough would work too! You can roll them out and use any cookie cutter for them or even just round cookies would work too.
Sugar Cookie Recipe:
- 3 Cups Flour
- 1 Cup Sugar
- 1-1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 Cup Butter
- 1 Egg
- 3 Tablespoons Milk
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla
Directions:
- Heat oven to 400ºF.
- Cream sugar & butter together. Add egg. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix.
- Roll out on floured surface. Use a cookie cutter to make the shapes you want. (We do hearts for Valentine's Day)
- Bake 5 to 8 minutes or until light brown.
Now for the star of the show! Here is the Cinnamon frosting recipe. This is such a unique flavor for me and I love it! You could also use any frosting recipe and just add the cinnamon flavoring but here is what we follow.
The cinnamon oil is a candy and baking flavoring oil that can be found in the baking aisle at most grocery stores, Amazon or Gygi's in Utah. Start with a drop or two and then add from there. It can get very strong so taste test before adding more.
Cinnamon Frosting Recipe:
- 3 Cups Powdered Sugar
- 1/2 Cup Salted Butter, Softened
- 1-1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1-2 Tablespoons Milk
- 3-4 drops of cinnamon oil
- Food Coloring (Optional)
Directions:
- Mix together powdered sugar with softened butter. Add Vanilla and 1 Tbsp of milk. If needed add a little more milk until its a smooth consistency.
- Add 3-4 drops of cinnamon oil
- Add food coloring if desired
- Frost the sugar cookies & decorate!
Once the cookies are cooled, frost with the Cinnamon Frosting. Don't forget to add sprinkles if you would like!
Be prepared to have a party in your mouth.
Let me know how your cookies turned out and if you liked them!
