Greg and I’s first Valentine’s together he surprised me with flowers, treats and balloons set up all cute. I think that started our tradition of celebrating the day every year after that. We show each other love everyday, but it’s fun to have a day to look forward to where we do something extra and out of routine. We tend to cook at home and go for a treat or stay home and make treats too. We don’t go overboard, but we do like to do something special for one another. Any excuse to have an extra date night during the week is okay with me!
Chocolate Covered Strawberries: I have started a tradition of making chocolate covered strawberries for Valentine's Day every year. We love it! They are easy to make and taste delicious. They are super cute for the holiday.
Cinnamon Cookies: One of my most favorite family recipes is cinnamon sugar cookies. They are normal sugar cookies with a candy cinnamon flavored frosting and they are to die for. We have made them a few times and I love them! We like to make ours in heart shapes with pink frosting but they could be done for any occasion! You can find the recipe here: Cinnamon Frosted Sugar Cookies
Normal Ice Cream: One of my favorite Valentine's memory was going to find a new treat place. We don't normally go out on Valentine's Day, so it was super fun! We went to Normal Ice cream in Trolley Square in Utah. They have a cute ice cream food truck in the mall. My husband tried the flavor of the month and I got a vanilla cone dipped in dark chocolate. They have a lot of different flavors and toppings, which makes it work for anyone's liking!
Steak Dinner: We tend to make steak and potatoes for our dinner on Valentine’s Day. It is a busy day to eat out so we like to make dinner together and just hang out at home. We like to get a favorite drink like chocolate milk, Martinelli's or Big Red Soda!
Fortune Cookies: We used to buy fortune cookies from Panda Express quite often. So, I ordered pink fortune cookies with love fortunes. They were the cutest thing for the holiday and my husband really liked them. I wrote a note and said "I'm fortunate to have you in my life."
Treats Instead of Gifts: We have started getting each other's favorites snacks and treats instead of giving gifts. It is a fun way to serve one another, other than giving gifts. Greg always does the cutest set up which makes it even sweeter!
Sticky Notes in a Heart Shape: One year I did a sticky note heart instead of a card which turned out super cute. My husband is really good at picking out cards too, which makes it fun for me to have a funny card. I like to do notes in Greg’s lunch throughout the year, but it's always good to remind them that you love them that day too!
Breakfast: There was one Valentine's Day growing up, my mom made us heart shaped pancakes and even the butter was shaped in hearts. I will forever remember that Valentine’s Day. It was so sweet and fun. We tend to make cinnamon rolls for breakfast now a days. I did a charcuterie board last year with heart shaped cinnamon rolls with pink icing and then lots of fruits! It was super cute!
Fruit Puns: On our first Valentine's being married, I wrote on Greg’s fruit for his work snacks with little puns about loving him. "You're the ripe one for me" and “Orange you glad we have each other." Just cheesy little puns to give him a laugh during the day!
Valentine's Day Treats: It is always fun to find holiday treats for any holiday so why not for Valentine's Day! Bakeries tend to have decorated bakery items with hearts, sprinkles and in the color pink. We have found a few different options like Cutlers for decorated sugar cookies, an ice cream cookie from Baskin Robbins, Kneaders for their sugar cookies, and donuts always have cute sprinkles or colors. We did an ice cream cake one year, Crumbl Cookies are always good, and there are tons of cute ideas on Pinterest to make your own treats if you don't want to go out!
Trader Joe's: We love going to Trader Joe's for their fun holiday treats. We went this year to see what they have for Valentine's Day and found just a couple of things, but they are super cute and fun! We got the X's and O's gummy candies which were actually pretty good. They have heart shape jelly beans, heart shaped macarons, heart shaped mousse cake and heart shaped cookies!
Heart-Attack: While I was on my mission, we would heart-attack people's doors. We would cut out a bunch of hearts and write notes on them and then we would stick them to the doors and let them find it. We got heart-attacked too which made us feel so loved! I have heart attacked our bed for my husband which was super cute too! This could be done for your neighbors, siblings, spouse or anyone!
Valentine's Garland: For Christmas this year my mom and I made a felt garland which turned out so cute! My mom got the idea to make a heart shaped felt garland for Valentine's Day. It just added a little pop of Valentine's in our front room and I love it! It is simple to make and very affordable. You take felt sheets and cut out in the shape you want and as many as you need to fit your space. Once they are all cut out you sew them together in one straight line. My mom put jute on the ends to hang them, but they work without too.
What are your Valentine's Day traditions?
