Big Four Bridge in Kentucky!

Big Four Bridge is located right in Downtown Louisville, Kentucky. It is now a pedestrian bridge, but it did use to be a railroad bridge that crosses the Ohio river into Jeffersonville, Indiana. It is about a mile long. It really is a neat spot to go to if you get a chance.

You are able to walk across the bridge from either side. We parked on the Kentucky side where the water park and playgrounds are, which has an opening to the bridge. Parking is free from the Kentucky side, but I'm not sure for the Indiana side. When we got to the Indiana side I didn't see any parking lots. Indiana had a bunch of open space for events along their side of the bridge and the downtown Main street across the street.

Along the bridge there is plenty of walking space on both sides for walking, running, biking, and stopping to look. When we went there was a ton of cars in the parking lot, but the bridge didn't feel too cramped. We walked the full length of the bridge into Indiana. There is music playing along the bridge. There are benches along the way to sit and relax. There was a lot of people strolling, running, riding bikes, and hanging out along the benches. It did get a little windy on the bridge so make sure to plan for that with clothing.

At night the bridge is lit up with lots of lights. The night I saw it was multiple colors, but the colors do change. It is really neat to see the city lights along the Big 4 Bridge. You can see the driving bridges next to the walking bridge and all the way down the Ohio river. The view is beautiful from the bridge just as much as it is from the city and roads.

During the end of April there is a Thunder Over Louisville event. The city does fireworks over the Ohio River off of the Big 4 Bridge. We missed it this year, but would love to go next year. It looks like they do concerts in the park throughout the summers. They have food trucks throughout the year in the parks, as well. There are parks and a splash pad right by the bridge that looked fun for the kiddos.

If you just want to go for the views and relax there are a ton of swings that line the Ohio River. We walked the bridge and then went and sat on the swings to get in some extra views. It really is so peaceful there. My first trip to Kentucky was in February and I went to the swings and sat for a bit. It was chillier then, but still enjoyable. The walk ways around the river are really neat if you don't want to do the bridge.

The greatest part of the Big 4 Bridge is that it is free!!! Parking is free, walking the bridge is free, and all the fun parks are free. I was so impressed with how neat of an experience this was and we didn't pay a dime. This will be our go-to spot with all of our visitors and our weekend adventures!

What fun things have you done in Kentucky?
