NuLu is the "New" Louisville in downtown Kentucky. There are a few blocks with newer restaurants, treat spots, and little boutique style shops. I have tried lots of the food spots in the area and have loved all of them. There is free parking at the south end of the NuLu area with majority of all the food spots. Downtown Louisville is just a few blocks west from there. It is a must stop if you are exploring Louisville.
Muth's Candies
Yummiest candy store in Kentucky that we have tried so far! The curb appeal of the store is adorable. It looks like it could be out of a movie or from the olden days. They have all the candies in glass displays throughout the little store. You are able to get pre bagged items or they can bag them up for you in the back. My favorites are the Majeska's with or without chocolate, chocolate mints, and the Ribbon caramels. My husband likes the turtles and my mom loves the mints. They are known for Bourbon balls and the Majeska's.
Please & Thank You
One of the first places we stopped when we first visited Kentucky was Please and Thank You. They are known for their chocolate chip cookies. They have a few other bakery items available and of course a coffee bar. The cookies are really good and is understandable why they are known for them. We do like there hot drinks from there. I have gotten the Mexican hot chocolate and the regular which were both good. My husband likes the honey coffee from there. The store is adorable and has a cute mural spot on the side of their building.
Royal's Hot Chicken
If you are wanting to experience Kentucky chicken then this is a good spot to start. The restaurant is a mix of old style with a bit of hip. It has some cool features in the building, as well as a cool mural art work on the side of the building. The menu is pretty basic with mostly chicken as the options. We got chicken fingers with their house made ranch dipping sauce. The French fries are the crinkle cuts style and the mac and cheese is awesome. They are known for their lemonade slushies that you can get with or without alcohol. This is a must stop by to experience the NuLu area for sure!
Lueberry
Another cool spot along Market Street is Lueberry Smoothies. The storefront is little and has a lot of cool features. There is a plant wall with Lueberry wording lit up on it. The smoothies and bowls are very healthy here, but have unique and fun flavors. My husband has gone a few times and has liked all the smoothies he's tried. He loves their Acai bowl. I got the Gold Rush smoothie that tasted just like fall in a cup. They have a few other menu options like avocado toast, salads, and wraps.
Murals
There are tons of murals in the NuLu area. There is a chicken with NuLu written on it near Royal's Hot Chicken. Please and Thank You has a Cookies and Coffee mural in blue. A flower mural is on Market Street. There is a Mint Julip mural. Quills has a really cool mural on the front of their building. There is a lightbulb with NuLu written on it. I see something new every time we are in the area!
Feast BBQ
A well known BBQ spot for Kentucky is Feast BBQ. They have a really cool location in the NuLu area. They are a little bit of a fancier BBQ spot, but still BBQ. We really liked their pulled pork seasonings. The French fries were yummy. This was the first fried Macaroni and Cheese ball I had tried and really liked them. My sister got the pulled pork tacos and said they were way good. They are usually busy there and the price is on the higher end for a lunch spot, but worth it for how good it was.
Guacamole
One of the best Mexican restaurants in town is Guac Mole. My husband first went when we were visiting for a work trip and he brought me back some corn tortillas and beans to try. The corn tortillas were the best I have had. The building is adorable and the inside has a bunch of little murals. You can smell the foods on ya after you leave meaning everything is made right there and fresh. We finally went together to try Guacamole and it really is good! I got the Birria tacos and we got the salsa flight. Everything was fresh and had so much flavor.
I think this next one might be a street too far to be considered NuLu, but this is our favorite spot to go to in the area so I have to include it. There are so many cool spots right around this area, too! There is the Big Four Bridge about five minute's from NuLu. The Slugger Museum is downtown about five minutes in another direction from NuLu. There are a ton of food options and 4th Street Live. You can see a lot of things in a short amount of time in downtown. Check out my blog on "What to Eat and Do in Louisville, KY."
Quills Coffee
My husbands favorite coffee shop is Quills Coffee. The downtown location is so cool, really all of the locations are, but this one is my favorite. The stores all have different themes and vibes throughout Kentucky. They have a good list of coffee options and some bakery items. I have gotten the hot chocolates and pumpkin steamers which were all good. I do hear the coffee is really good from there though!
