Wintertime in Kentucky!

Wintertime in Kentucky is the best! I am from Utah, so I am used to near zero temperatures for a month or two straight and snow that sticks for weeks! There were winter's while I lived in Minnesota that were even worse than Utah, so Kentucky's winter's are a treat! You get snow, chilly days and wintery skies, but they don't last very long. This last winter was over in a blink of an eye! We adventured out a bit during the winter so here are my thoughts on wintertime in Kentucky.

The WEATHER in Kentucky is pretty mild. It does get cold in December, January and February, but the sun still shines. We got a few snow days this past year, but the snow doesn't stay on the ground very long. It gets a little misty or foggy and there are icy roads on the colder day's. Luckily, we didn't have to drive a lot during the cold day's last winter. Be sure to watch the weather and go out on the nice days!

We have found the best HOT CHOCOLATE spots in Kentucky! It never hurts to find a yummy warm drink on a cold wintery day! There are a few go-to coffee shops we love. Quill's is our number one spot. They have good hot chocolate, but their seasonal flavors are my favorite! Please and Thank You is one of my favorite coffee shops. They have Mexican Hot chocolate on the menu, but you can get regular hot chocolate as well. They do have the best chocolate chip cookies so don't forget to get one! North Lime Coffee and Donut's is another one of our go-to coffee shops. They have awesome hot chocolates and of course donuts too!

Something about winter makes me crave DONUTS! There are so many cute donut shops in Kentucky. Amazin Glazin for Valentine's Day is my favorite for this time of the year! There are really good donuts at Nord's Bakery, Hadorn's Bakery, and Sugar & Spice. The donut shops are usually next to a coffee shop or they are all in one. It is one of our go-to's during the cold months to grab a hot chocolate and donut.

On super cold day's it is always a good idea to go somewhere warm inside like MALIBU JACKS or DAVE AND BUSTER'S type of places. We have been to both of these in Kentucky and thought they were super fun places for kids and adults! We have also gone to the SKY ZONE jump park which was a great place for kids! There are quite a few indoor activity spots in Kentucky!

We did a MUTH'S CANDIES date last winter and it was one of my favorite things! It had just snowed so there was some snow on the ground. The NuLu area was so cute with the snow on the streets. We grabbed our favorite Majeska's and chocolate turtles. This is all decked out for Valentine's Day and would be a perfect treat for the holiday!

Kentucky does have a few really nice MALLS here. We love the St. Matthew's mall for the movie theater, store's and food spots. There is a really fancy mall down the road called the Oxmoor Center. During the holiday's this is a fun activity to do, but be prepared for it to be busy! After the new year the mall tends to slow down so it is a great spot to go walk around and shop! We did go to the Outlet Shoppes at the Bluegrass in Simpsonville during the winter months and froze! Maybe hold off for the warmer months for that one!

The winter HOLIDAY'S were magical in Kentucky. We loved Christmas, New Year's and Valentine's Day. Driving through the old towns for the Christmas season was so neat. The decorations and the old buildings are the perfect mix. The weather really is pretty mild so it is fun to explore and be out during the holidays. There were so many fun things to get for Valentine's day like heart shaped donuts from Amazin' Glazin' and every bakery had some type of holiday treat available.

BRUNCH is probably a bit more popular during the winter months than an early breakfast! It helps to have the sun up during the cold months for sure! We have a few favorite brunch spots like Con Huevos, First Watch and Morning Fork. I have a full list of my favorite brunch spots on the blog here: Brunch Spots in Kentucky!

SOUP is my go-to meal during the winter months! Panera is one of my favorite spots for getting soup. They have the best Broccoli and Cheddar soup in a bread bowl. We make a lot of at home soups like Taco soup, Chicken Noodle, and Tortilla Soup. Chick-Fil-A has a really good Chicken Noodle soup. We haven't found many other spots for soup here yet! We will have to be on the look out for some new spots for soup in Kentucky!

Last winter we were able to ROAD TRIP in the middle of winter. The weather is that mild! We drove to Tennessee and to Georgia. Definitely watch the weather since it does get icy, but on a clear day it was a normal day of driving. We adventured out to Lexington last winter as well! Even during the winter months the states are beautiful and are still great to visit!
