We road tripped to Canada this past year and tried some of the Canadian known foods! We spent three days in Toronto, Canada and loved it! I was surprised at how similar the foods were to the U.S., but we did find some unique items that can't be found in America. The grocery stores were my favorite place to stop by, but we did get to try some foods at a market and at some of the restaurants in town as well. Here are all the Canadian foods we tried while we were in town!
Peameal Sandwich- If you could only try one thing from Canada, this would be my top suggestion! The Peameal sandwich is a Canadian bacon sliced sandwich that comes with a few different topping options. You could find these in a few different places, but we tried them at the Paddington shop at the St. Lawrence Market. I tried mine with just tomatoes on top and thought the flavors went well together. The bacon had so much flavor and went well with the bun they used. This was my favorite thing we tried in Canada!
Tim Horton's Donuts- There was a Tim Horton's on every corner in downtown Toronto! We stopped by twice on our trip. We tried the Timbits which are little donut holes. I enjoyed the donuts a tad bit more than the donut holes. The donuts were soft and had good flavor. There were quite a few donut flavors. The donut holes were good, but a little dryer and I didn't love the flavors I picked. Walking around town, you'd see someone holding a coffee cup from there all over! It is a fun spot to try, but not a must if you don't have time! We did find that the U.S. does have some Tim Horton's too!
Poutine- I was hesitant to try Poutine, but I found out that Costco's food court carried it. It was cheap and came with a big serving amount. Poutine is French fries covered with brown gravy and cheese curds. It was actually really good! The best gravy I have ever had. The cheese melts on top and the flavors go really well together. The only thing I didn't love was that the fries went soggy really fast. I would get the gravy on the side and dip them next time! It was still delicious! We saw this on quite a few menus and places we had stopped.
BeaverTail- There is a place right by the riverfront called BeaverTail's. It seemed like they were a known treat in Canada! It is a scone shaped like a beaver's tail and then lots of different topping options. I got the Nutella and powdered sugar flavor and my husband tried the apple pie beaver tail. The scone was crispy with a soft center. They put a good amount of toppings on top. You can even get ice cream as a topping! There was a line, but the service was super quick! You do have to ask for a box if you are taking it on the go, but they transferred back to the hotel well.
Candy Bars- I was on a mission to find the Canadian candy bars! Luckily they are in all the souvenir shops and the grocery store. We picked up the Smarties, Mars Bar and the Oh Henry Bar. Very similar to American candy, but named differently. I loved the Mars Bar, but that is my favorite chocolate bar in America too! The smarties are not like our sour, tart like smarties, but they are chocolate coated candies! That shocked me when I opened that little box! There were quite a few other candy options to try, but those are the one's we picked up this trip! Costco had a big variety box of the chocolate bars you can get in Canada as well!
Canada Dry Soda- While in Canada, you have to get a Canada Dry soda! We tried a limited edition flavor which was Raspberry Lemonade. The flavor was delicious! The drink still had the fizzy ginger taste, but with a hint of lemonade. It was a good mix. You can't get that flavor in America, so I was glad we got to try it there! This drink is made in Canada, so it was cool to get to drink it in Canada too!
Maple Syrup- We had a good laugh about the maple syrup. We were on the hunt to get Canada maple syrup. We found some cute shops at the St. Lawrence Market and were going to pick up a bottle on our way out. My husband searched the best brand to get and it said the Costco maple syrup that is from Canada. The one we have sitting in our fridge at home. It was pretty funny. We didn't get any syrup from Canada, but they did have lots of options. I have tried their maple syrup leaf cookies that are so yummy!
What are your favorite foods from the country you are from?
